The thousand-year-old castle of Trancoso contrasts with the shocks and fears lived by the peoples of other times. A borderland, it was the stage of various significant fights and battles that gave way to the formation and independence of the kingdom. The remains of that time still resist the present day, to remind us of the valiant people that we are – and of the importance of the borderland peoples in defending the kingdom. Excellent pretexts for an escapade to this Historical Village, where there are more than enough excellent options for accommodation and rest.
Afonso Henriques granted the Charter to Trancoso, and D. Afonso III conceded the Feira Charter. D. Denis ordered the construction of the walls that still protect a burg where Christians and Jews once lived together. The belt of walls that surround the old medieval village, as well as the vast civil and religious architectural heritage, give the Historic Center a unique image. Trancoso is, like the other Historical Villages of Portugal, a picturesque village that deserves a visit not only because of its significance to our History, but also because of its natural beauty.
It is worth spending a few days in the village in order to get to know its every nook, especially since there are excellent accommodations in the region. Solar Sampaio e Melo is one example. Located in Largo Eduardo Cabral, it offers 8 double rooms and 2 suites decorated in a perfect symbiosis of antique family furniture with the luxury of modernity. All the rooms include a flat-screen television with satellite channels and a private bathroom. Solar even has a library, main room, indoor patio, children’s park, meeting room, and game room, in addition to free Wi-Fi service. In the garden, separated by high walls that offer even more privacy, guests can find some unique characteristics, such as the centennial camellias, the turret with its battlements, the bar for relaxing, and an outdoor pool for warmer days.
The local accommodation D. Dinis is another lodging recommendation, located 50 meters from the Historic Center of Trancoso, near the Truck Depot. With comfortable accommodations, a small lunch buffet included in the price of the room, and daily cleaning, it is surrounded by local restaurants – perfect for anyone looking to taste local cuisine and traditional Portuguese dishes.
In the village of Rabaçal in the municipality of Mêda, less than half an hour from Trancoso, we find another manor constructed by the Sampaio e Mello family. Integrated into a vast property with nearly 27 hectares, Casa do Redondo is a charming rental accomodation that provides its guests not only with peace in a rural Portuguese house, but also the pleasure of living in a luxurious manor of the 18th century. The house has five rooms: Three double rooms and two twin rooms. With a garden and a pool, Casa do Redondo even promotes horseback and chariot rides, thus ensuring the guests have days filled with adventure and discovery through the countryside of the Centro region of Portugal.
In the village of Juízo, almost 30 minutes from Trancoso, we find Casas do Juízo – Turismo de Aldeia. With 5 houses, this local accommodation offers a total of 8 beds for couples. All the houses include an equipped kitchen, air conditioning, and a thermal store. Casas do Juízo are integrated into a closed condominium, located in the center of the village, where we find Taberna do Juízo. Specialized in traditional dishes of the region, Taberna do Juízo is a must-stop for whoever wants to enjoy a delicious Beira meal.
And we have yet to mention Longroiva Hotel & Termal SPA, located less than a half hour away from Trancoso. A charming place in the middle of nature, where guests may enjoy all the benefits of the spa town in which the hotel unit was erected. At Longroiva Hotel & Termal SPA, we even find a heated pool, gym, game room, sauna, whirlpool baths, and other services that ensure topnotch wellness and comfort.
Perfect suggestions to spend a reinvigorating stay in Trancoso and to get to know this enchanting Historical Village in detail. Certainly, it will not be the only visit, because whoever visits the Historical Villages does not resist coming back!
